Pilot Briefing  N51 08.33   W001 25.28

PPR

By landing at the airfield all pilots will be deemed to have read and agreed to abide by the following briefing notes and also agreed to the Airfield Terms and Conditions of use.

Prior permission is not required to land at Chilbolton, but any pilot wishing to do so must familiarize themselves with this information and are reminded that it is the pilots' responsibility to ensure it is both safe to land and take off at the airfield and must take all possible steps to confirm this as per the Air Navigation Order. If there is any doubt as to your ability to operate safely from this airfield then please either visit on foot or fly in with an instructor on your first visit.

IMPORTANT: The airfield is under the Middle Wallop MATZ. When Middle Wallop is active, aircraft are advised to contact Middle Wallop ATC on 118.600 and inform them of your intention to land here - either to pass under the MATZ or request clearance into it. Before departing, call Middle Wallop ATC again to advise on your departure - either stay below the MATZ base until clear or request clearance. If you are non radio or wish to discuss things first, telephone Middle Wallop ATC before arrival and/or departure on 01264 784380.You will also need to make broadcasts on 135.480 to 'Chilbolton Traffic' to inform any other aircraft that you are landing/taking off operating in the circuit.

Self Briefing Notes

  • All pilots on arrival are to park outside the caravan which is designated "C". Pilots must then complete the Movement Log which is located in the caravan and pay the landing fee.

  • The airfield is unmanned and is not inspected on a day to day basis. There may be holes, debris and other hazards that may endanger either your landing, takeoff or approach. Do not land if you are in doubt.

  • Be aware of sometimes very active low level military helicopter and aircraft activity. KEEP A GOOD LOOKOUT

  • Do not overfly Chilbolton village (N) or radar dish (NNW).

  • All circuits to the South at 600ft QFE.

  • No helicopters permitted due planning constraints.

  • Power cables 24ft high cross 24 final approach and alongside runway, behind and above the hedge, on south side. These are marked with orange aviation balls.

  • Airfield unmanned, make blind calls on Safetycom frequency (135.480 MHz) to 'Chilbolton Traffic'.

  • CAUTION, RUNWAY 06: If using the holding area on the south side at the end of runway 06, exercise extreme caution before entering the runway and check carefully for a/c on final approach for 06 as trees/bushes can obscure the view from the holding area.

  • Fire Extinguishers and First Aid Box can be found in the caravan marked 'C' near the aircraft parking area on the North side of the airfield.

  • NOTE: airfield suffers from Rabbits! Small but sometimes deep holes may be encountered in the parking/manoeuvring area between the runway, the hangars on the east side and the caravan. Taxi at slow speed and with care!

  • Wild Deer can occasionally be found grazing or wandering on the runway - they are dark coloured so keep careful lookout on final - a low pass usually clears them away.

  • Large Buzzards can sometimes be found gliding in thermals over and near to the airfield. Keep a good lookout in the overhead and when operating in the circuit and on final.

  • Grass cutting tractor occasionally operating on the runway. Driver does not have radio (yet) so make a low pass alongside to make driver aware you wish to land and he will move.

Important - Aproach to 24L

Before arriving please make sure you can identify 24L. Please study the image below which shows the position and markings for 24L. We have had pilots landing and taking off on the rough ground when using 24L!

Circuit Radio Calls

Before joining and in the circuit make broadcasts on 135.480 to 'Chilbolton Traffic' to inform any other aircraft that you are landing/taking off or operating in the circuit. Please start and end with "Chilbolton Traffic" as many other local sites use this frequency.
